The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced former Lumezi Member of Parliament, Munir Zulu, to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for seditious practices.
Magistrate Trevor Kasanda has also fined him over K800 for the same offense.
This means Zulu will serve jail time in addition to paying the fine.
Under Section 60 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, seditious practices carry a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment, a fine not exceeding 6,000 penalty units, or both.
Zulu was convicted for a September 6, 2023, social media post in which he claimed President Hakainde Hichilema would dissolve Parliament and call early elections on September 8.
Prosecutors said the statement could incite public disorder and undermine the government.
Last month, Chief Resident Magistrate Davies Chibwili sentenced Zulu to one year with hard labour for defaming Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi, and RDA Board Chairperson Mulchand Kuntawala.
