Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) says its has received reports alleging that members of the United Party for National Development (UPND) have been collecting voters’ card numbers and National Registration Card (NRC) details from members of the public in Luangeni District Eastern Province, Zambezi and Mwinilunga Districts in North-Western Province, Mansa District , Monze District in and Kasama District among other areas.
TI-Z says while it continues to monitor and verify the reports, the alleged practice has raised concern among citizens over the purpose for which the information is being collected.
The organisation has called on all political parties to respect citizens’ right to vote freely and independently and to refrain from practices that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
TIZ Executive Director Maurice Nyambe says as Zambia enters the final weeks before the August 13 general election, all electoral stakeholders should be mindful of the commitments they voluntarily made during the 2025 Zambia Anti-Corruption Conference (ZACC), where political parties, including the UPND, Citizens First and the Patriotic Front (PF), together with institutions such as the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Human Rights Commission (HRC), pledged to uphold integrity and transparency in the electoral process.
TI-Z has further reiterated that safeguarding the integrity of the elections is a shared responsibility and has urged political parties, civil society organisations, the media, the ECZ, state institutions and citizens to work together to ensure the electoral process remains credible and trusted by all stakeholders.
