ZAMBIA MARKS 14 YEARS SINCE HISTORIC AFCON TRIUMPH OVER IVORY COAST

.

Fourteen years ago today, Zambia etched its name in African football history by winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.

The Chipolopolo defeated Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties following a goalless draw at the Stade de l’Amitié in Libreville, Gabon on February 12, 2012.

The final was the only match in the entire tournament to end without a goal, with both teams locked in a tense defensive battle through 120 minutes of play.

Zambia’s penalty shootout victory was particularly poignant as it came in Gabon, the same country where the 1993 national team perished in a plane crash.
