CANADA EDGE SOUTH AFRICA WITH STOPPAGE-TIME GOAL TO REACH ROUND OF 16

.

Canada have advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history, beating South Africa 1-0 in a tense Round of 32 match.

Stephen Eustáquio scored deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic victory, netting the only goal of a hard-fought contest in which both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the 90 minutes.

Canada captain Alphonso Davies made his tournament debut after missing the entire group stage with a hamstring injury and immediately provided a boost to Jesse Marsch’s side.

His introduction injected pace and creativity into Canada’s attack, creating several chances that kept South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams busy in the closing stages.

South Africa were far from passive, with Oswin Appollis coming closest for Bafana Bafana in the 62nd minute, his shot from the edge of the box slicing just wide.

The group-stage winners defended resolutely throughout but could not find the goal they needed to extend their remarkable World Cup run.

Canada will now advance to the Round of 16 in Houston, where they will face the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco.

For South Africa, the World Cup journey ends here, but their campaign, which included a historic first qualification for the knockout stage, will be remembered as one of the stories of this tournament.
