SUSPECTS IN ALBINO REMAINS THEFT ARRESTED IN SOUTHERN ZAMBIA

Police in Southern Province have arrested two individuals in connection with the disturbing theft of human remains, specifically targeting individuals with albinism, in two separate incidents. These cases have raised serious concerns about the safety and dignity of gravesites in the region.

In one incident, the grave of the late Sebastian Mwiinga, a person with albinism, was reportedly tampered with in Kasonde village, Gwembe District. Investigations revealed that Cornwell Siachinungu, a local resident, is a primary suspect in the exhumation. According to police, Siachinungu was seen carrying a pick and shovels in the area, accompanied by two unidentified accomplices. The shocking discovery was reported by village headman Stanfold Hamuchilika, aged 54, who witnessed suspicious activity in the vicinity.

In a separate but equally concerning case, the remains of Martin Macdonald Wash, another person with albinism who passed away in 2000, were reportedly stolen from his resting place in the Choongo chiefdom of Monze District. Police have identified the suspect as Nicholas Habeenzu, who is believed to have desecrated the grave for unknown reasons.

The targeted theft of remains of individuals with albinism has sparked outrage and fear within the community. These acts are suspected to be linked to the growing demand for body parts of people with albinism, driven by superstitious beliefs and ritualistic practices. Such beliefs falsely claim that body parts of individuals with albinism bring wealth or good fortune.

Authorities have intensified investigations into these incidents and are urging community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near graveyards. Law enforcement officials have also reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and upholding the dignity of deceased individuals.

Community leaders and human rights organizations are calling for enhanced security at cemeteries, increased public awareness campaigns, and stricter penalties for perpetrators involved in such heinous crimes. These cases highlight the urgent need to address harmful superstitions and protect the rights and safety of people with albinism, both in life and after death.

Anyone with information that may assist in the ongoing investigations is encouraged to report to the nearest police station.
