The removal of mobile money booths in the Central Business District (CBD) by the Ndola City Council has left several operators frustrated and facing unexpected challenges. The move, which was carried out early on Tuesday morning, follows months of discussions between the council, mobile money operators, and other stakeholders.
Ndola City Council Public Relations Manager, Rebecca Mushota, clarified that the use of booths is not permitted in the CBD, although mobile money trading is still allowed using tables and umbrellas. She emphasized that the council has been actively engaging with operators since March, informing them about the restrictions through meetings and public notices.
Despite these efforts, many mobile money operators expressed dissatisfaction with the council’s approach, arguing that the removal of the booths was abrupt and unfair. Vincly Kangwa, a local operator, stated that the council should have provided more time for operators to adjust or offered alternative solutions before taking such drastic action.
The removal of the mobile money booths has disrupted the livelihoods of numerous individuals who rely on this business for their income. It remains to be seen how the operators will adapt to the new regulations and whether the council will provide any additional support or assistance to help them mitigate the impact of this change.
