Former Cabinet Minister Chishimba Kambwili has been fined K25,000 by the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court after admitting an immigration offence linked to his departure from Zambia in January 2024.
Appearing before Magistrate George Njobvu, Mr. Kambwili changed his plea from not guilty to guilty on charges of leaving the country without presenting himself before immigration officers at a designated point of entry.
The court heard that Mr. Kambwili unlawfully crossed into Zimbabwe through Chirundu Border Control between January 1 and January 30, 2024 without undergoing required immigration exit procedures.
In mitigation, the defence asked the court to exercise leniency, describing Mr. Kambwili as a first offender who had served the country in various capacities and had not wasted the court’s time by admitting the offence.
Magistrate Njobvu later sentenced Mr. Kambwili to pay a fine of K25,000 or serve seven months simple imprisonment in default of payment.
