The Climate Action Foundation (CAF) has urged Government to remain vigilant in safeguarding national food security, emphasizing the need for robust monitoring systems to ensure that increased maize exports do not lead to domestic shortages or rising mealie meal prices.
In a statement, CAF Executive Director Dr. Oliver Kandela Bulaya stressed the importance of strengthening strategic food reserves to cushion against potential supply shocks, as well as enhancing market regulation to prevent hoarding and speculative trading.
Dr. Bulaya also called for continued support to small scale farmers to boost productivity and resilience, particularly in the face of climate variability.
He noted that while the decision by Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, to remove restrictions on the export of maize grain and maize products is commendable, it must be accompanied by deliberate measures that balance export promotion with the protection of local consumers.
Dr. Bulaya emphasized CAF’s commitment to supporting policies that promote inclusive agricultural growth and sustainable livelihoods for all Zambians.
