Luapula Province has once again emerged as the country’s leading cassava-producing province, contributing the largest share of Zambia’s projected cassava output during the 2025/2026 Agricultural Season.
According to the 2025/2026 Crop Forecasting Survey, the province is expected to produce approximately 1.23 million metric tonnes of cassava from more than 104,000 hectares planted, accounting for the largest contribution to national cassava production.
The province’s strong performance comes as Zambia records its highest-ever maize harvest, with production projected to exceed 5.1 million metric tonnes.
In a statement, Luapula Province Principal Public Relations Officer Emmanuel Maseko says the achievement reflects Government’s efforts to boost agricultural productivity and improve food security across the country.
Mr. Maseko notes that the province’s continued dominance in cassava production highlights its important role in supporting national food security, promoting crop diversification and creating employment opportunities.
He adds that the Crop Forecasting Survey projects a national food surplus of more than 1.48 million metric tonnes of maize equivalent for the 2026/2027 marketing season, further strengthening the country’s food security position.
Mr. Maseko says Government remains committed to supporting farmers through timely access to farming inputs, improved extension services, mechanisation, irrigation development and expanded market opportunities aimed at increasing productivity and household incomes.
