ZAMBIA POLICE GEAR UP FOR 24-HOUR ECONOMY ROLLOUT

.

The Zambia Police Service says it is fully prepared to support the implementation of the Government’s 24-hour economy agenda through enhanced security operations and increased police visibility.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says the Service has repositioned itself to meet the demands of a round-the-clock economic system, which is expected to stimulate growth and create employment opportunities.

Mr. Musamba says the Police Command has undertaken a comprehensive assessment of policing requirements under the 24-hour economy, including capacity-building programmes to enhance officers’ skills and operational capabilities, as well as investment in technological infrastructure.

He explains that the Service will also strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders in the commercial sector to reinforce crime prevention strategies, including the formation of additional Community Crime Prevention Units as complementary security measures.

Mr. Musamba has assured members of the public that police officers will act professionally during the implementation of the 24-hour economy and will not arbitrarily arrest citizens at night for minor offences, commonly referred to as “shishita,” unless the law is contravened.

.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General notes that the scaling down of security checkpoints from 47 to 22, as well as the lifting of the night travel ban on public service vehicles, is aimed at improving the smooth movement of goods and services and supporting economic activity.

He adds that officers across the country have been directed to remain on high alert through intensified highway patrols, snap road checks, enforcement of speed regulations, and continuous monitoring of road users’ conduct.

Mr. Musamba has reiterated that the Zambia Police Service will not stand in the way of progressive government policies aimed at promoting economic development and national prosperity.
