IMF EYES POST-ELECTION TALKS WITH ZAMBIA AFTER HISTORIC VOTE

.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says discussions with Zambia on future economic support and reforms could begin as early as late April, but substantive negotiations are expected only after the country’s general elections later this year.

According to IMF staff, postponing detailed talks until after the elections and the formation of a new government would provide clearer direction on policy priorities and help shape reforms aimed at promoting private sector-led growth and maintaining macroeconomic stability.

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team, led by Edward Gemayel, visited Zambia from February 26 to March 4, 2026, as part of the Fund’s regular engagement with the Zambian authorities and other stakeholders.

During the visit, the IMF delegation held meetings with key Zambian leaders, including President Hakainde Hichilema, Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, and Bank of Zambia Governor Denny Kalyalya.

The team also engaged senior government officials, civil society organisations, and development partners.

The Fund has expressed appreciation for the “open and constructive engagement” shown by the Zambian authorities and other stakeholders during the discussions.

The IMF has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zambia’s ongoing reform agenda and efforts to safeguard macroeconomic stability as the country continues to navigate economic challenges and pursue sustainable growth.
