Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding along the Lundazi River, resulting in widespread destruction to homes and agricultural land in the area. The floods have left an as-yet undetermined number of families homeless and have washed away crops, threatening local food security.
Residents report that flooding of this magnitude has not been seen since the 1980s. The Mphamba Bridge, which was originally washed away in 1984 and rebuilt by the Zambia National Service the following year, has been partially damaged by the current floods.
Affected families are assessing their losses and are urgently appealing to the government, specifically the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), for immediate assistance and relief support.
The impact of the flooding extends beyond Zambia’s borders, causing significant damage to infrastructure and farmlands in Malawi’s neighboring Kasungu and Nkhotakota districts.
