KCM MARKS WORLD TOILET DAY WITH MAJOR COMMUNITY SANITATION GAINS

.

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has marked World Toilet Day, observed annually on November 19, by highlighting its efforts to improve sanitation and access to clean water in communities around its operations.

This year’s theme, “Sanitation in a Changing World”, underpins KCM’s ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at strengthening water and sanitation systems.

Over the past year, KCM, in partnership with Village Water Zambia, has reached 19,778 people with various water and sanitation interventions.

The company has installed 10 commercial boreholes in Shibuyunji, Chililabombwe, Kitwe, and Chingola, boosting access to safe and reliable water for households. In addition, 34 non-functional water points have been rehabilitated, in collaboration with District Water Affairs Departments, to ensure proper assessment, repair, and ongoing maintenance.

In Chingola, KCM worked with the Municipal Council to restore the water system at Chiwempala Market after fire damage and is now supporting the reconstruction of the market’s ablution block. The restored facilities are once again serving the local community.

KCM says its commitment goes beyond its workforce, stressing that improved sanitation is essential for public health, climate resilience, and human dignity.

The mining company reaffirmed its pledge to partner with local authorities, NGOs, and community structures to build cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environments.
