NGOs CONDEMN ALLEGED POLICE ASSAULT ON GIRL

.

The Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has condemned the alleged assault of a young girl by a police officer in a video circulating on social media.

Speaking in an interview, NGOCC Executive Director Annie Mbewe called on the Zambia Police Service to ensure the officer involved is held accountable, saying the rights of the girl child must be protected.

Meanwhile, Media Network on Children’s Rights Executive Director Henry Kabwe also condemned the incident, describing both the alleged assault and the recording of the girl’s face in the video as violations of the Children’s Code Act and an embarrassment to the Zambia Police Service.

Mr Kabwe has called for reforms within the police service to promote professionalism and strengthen the protection of children’s rights.

Meanwhile, Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Goldfrey Chilabi says four people have been arrested in connection with the incident
