The Zambia Police Service has dismissed social media claims that several people were shot and killed during an incident in Kalingalinga and Mtendere compounds, describing the reports as false.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says no life was lost during the incident, contrary to information circulating online.
Mr. Chilabi explains that during a crowd control and management operation, police officers discharged tear smoke canisters to disperse a crowd, he says a pellet from one of the canisters inadvertently struck a girl from Mtendere Compound on the leg while she was some distance away from the operational area.
He further says that the girl was immediately rushed to Mtendere Clinic for treatment and was later discharged after receiving medical attention.
Mr. Chilabi adds that police have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
