POLITICAL PARTIES URGED TO REMAIN DISCIPLINED FOLLOWING LUSAKA INCIDENT

Government has dismissed social media reports claiming that several people were shot and killed by police during incidents in Kalingalinga and Mutendere on July 16, saying no fatalities were recorded.

Speaking during a media briefing, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana says police only discharged tear smoke canisters to manage crowds after an unnotified political roadshow.

Mr. Kawana says the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) had notified police of a presidential campaign rally at the National Heroes Stadium, but instead conducted a roadshow through Kalingalinga and Mutendere, prompting police intervention following reports of disturbances.

He had has confirmed that a girl from Mutendere sustained a pellet injury, was u later discharged from hospital, while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, Mr Kawana says police have launched investigations into suspected political violence in Libala, where cases of assault, aggravated robbery, malicious damage to property and unlawful wounding were recorded.

He says several people were injured, vehicles damaged and one victim remains hospitalised.

The Permanent Secretary has urged political parties to maintain discipline among supporters and says those responsible for violence will face the law regardless of political affiliation.
