Zambia’s hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup playoffs have ended after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Niger at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The Chipolopolo dominated much of the match but failed to make their chances count, while Niger capitalized on one of their few opportunities to score the decisive goal in the second half.
Speaking during a post-match briefing, Niger coach Badu Zaki says his team was fully aware of Zambia’s attacking strength, especially through their wide players, and planned their strategy accordingly.
Zaki says although his side spent much of the game defending, they remained composed and waited for the right moment to strike.
He added that the victory reflects how competitive African football has become, stressing that there are no longer small teams on the continent.
Meanwhile, Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant admitted that his side created enough chances to win the game but lacked precision in front of goal.
Grant says Zambia could have been three goals up by halftime if they had taken advantage of their opportunities, but football is about scoring and Niger made theirs count.
The result leaves Zambia out of contention for the World Cup playoffs, while Niger walked away with pride and a hard-fought victory on foreign soil.
