Police in Chongwe are investigating a suspected case of malicious administration of a noxious substance after 13 female pupils at Matipula Secondary School were hospitalized following a suspected gassing incident.
According to a statement issued by the Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident happened on Thursday between 09:30 hours and 10:00 hours at the school in Chongwe District.
Chilabi says the matter was reported by a 43-year-old male teacher of Chongwe Township on behalf of the school administration.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two male pupils, aged 17 and 18, allegedly sprayed a suspected noxious gas substance into a classroom while other pupils were present.
The incident was first noticed when two female pupils reportedly left the classroom and collapsed shortly afterwards. A third female pupil also collapsed moments later, prompting teachers to evacuate all pupils from the classroom after suspecting a gassing incident.
Police say investigations led to the identification and apprehension of the two suspects, who are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Authorities have also launched a manhunt for a third male pupil who is suspected to have supplied the substance used in the incident. The pupil allegedly fled the school premises shortly after the incident occurred.
A total of 13 female pupils were rushed to Chongwe District Hospital for medical treatment. Eight pupils have since been discharged, while five remain admitted in stable condition and are reported to be out of danger.
Police officers who visited the scene recovered a bottle suspected to contain the substance. The bottle has since been secured as an exhibit and will undergo forensic examination.
Meanwhile, police have opened an inquiry file and investigations into the matter are continuing.
