The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has commended the North Swaka Trust for conserving the Mkushi Headwaters, a critical protected forest and water catchment area in Central Province.
Speaking when a team of board members from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) toured the area, Ministry Principal Forest Officer Stephen Katongo said several river systems originate from the forest and supply water to residents of Mkushi.
Mr Katongo said conserving the area helps protect the entire ecosystem and biodiversity while sustaining the livelihoods of local communities.
Meanwhile, North Swaka Trust Engagement Coordinator John Mwaba said the conservation of the forest has involved ensuring that illegal activities are not carried out by local people.
