
Six passengers have died, while nine others sustained serious injuries after a Toyota Quantum bus overturned along the Great North Road in Mazabuka District.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo has confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on September 7, 2026, at around 15:30 hours in the Cottage area, about 35 kilometres south of Mazabuka Town along the Great North Road.
Mr Namalongo says the accident involved a Toyota Quantum bus bearing registration number ARB 4161 ZM, which was being driven by an unidentified male driver whose age and residential address are not yet known.
He says the vehicle was travelling from the southern direction towards the north when the driver allegedly lost control due to excessive speed, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The motor vehicle sustained extensive damage.
Six passengers, one male and five females, sustained fatal head and body injuries. They were rushed to Mazabuka General Hospital, where they died upon arrival.
Their bodies have since been deposited in the hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations.
Meanwhile, nine other passengers sustained serious bodily injuries and were rushed to Mazabuka General Hospital, where they are currently admitted and receiving treatment.
The whereabouts of the driver remain unknown, and police have instituted investigations into the accident.
