Lawyer Josia Kalala has confirmed that Third Liberation Movement President Enock Roosevelt Tonga is being represented by COF Chambers, as his detention by police continues to stretch beyond 20 days since his apprehension at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
Mr Kalala says the legal team is engaging the police and other law enforcement agencies over Tonga’s case, but has declined to comment further.
Mr Tonga was apprehended on August 17th after reportedly calling on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to suspend the announcement of election results.
Meanwhile, EFF President and Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance Council of Presidents member Kasonde Mwenda has raised concern over Tonga’s continued detention, questioning why police have yet to publicly state what charge he is facing.
Mr Mwenda is calling on authorities to either take Tonga to court or release him, arguing that the prolonged detention raises serious concerns about the rule of law and respect for democratic rights.
The Zambia Police Service has remained silent on Tonga’s prolonged detention, with no public explanation so far on why he remains in custody at Kabwata Police station or what charges he is facing.
