The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union has demanded urgent Government intervention in settling outstanding terminal benefits owed to University of Zambia employees, some dating back more than a decade.
Speaking on behalf of the Union, UNZALARU President Andrew Phiri has expressed concern over delayed pensions, gratuities and superannuation benefits, saying retired workers continue to suffer financial hardship despite years of dedicated service to the nation.
The Union says outstanding obligations include ZSIC superannuation benefits dating back to 2012, gratuities from 2016 and pensions from 2021, arguing that these are lawful entitlements earned by workers and not favours from Government.
Mr. Phiri says despite several engagements with Government and participation in various consultative processes aimed at addressing the University’s financial challenges, little progress has been made in resolving the matter.
He adds that the continued delays have left many former employees struggling to pay for medical bills, school fees and other basic needs, while some retirees have reportedly died before receiving what is owed to them.
The Union has further questioned Government’s commitment to the welfare of university workers, warning that failure to urgently address the growing K1.3 billion liability could worsen the crisis at the country’s premier institution of higher learning.
