United Party for National Development Kamwala former Ward 5 Councillor Mainda Simataa has resigned from the ruling party with immediate effect, citing concerns over what he describes as undemocratic laws being enacted by Parliament.
In a resignation letter addressed to the party secretariat, Simataa said the enactment and amendment of laws such as the Public Gathering Act violate citizens’ constitutional rights and freedoms of assembly, association, and expression. He argues that such laws undermine democracy and the rule of law in Zambia.
The councillor stated that his resignation was a demonstration of disapproval of the laws, which he said were dismantling the freedoms upon which the ruling party rose to power.
Despite his resignation, Simataa thanked the party for the opportunity to serve the people of Kamwala Ward 5 under the New Dawn Administration, which he acknowledged had made notable socio-economic progress. Copies of the resignation letter were also addressed to the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the UPND Kabwata Constituency leadership.
