Poor road conditions, inadequate street lighting, and weak traffic enforcement are raising fresh concerns over the safety of commuters following the lifting of night travel restrictions in Zambia.
The Commuter Rights Association of Zambia (CRAZ) says these challenges could expose passengers and drivers to accidents and crime, particularly during extended transport operations at night.
In a statement, CRAZ President Aaron Kamuti says the association acknowledges the government’s decision to withdraw Statutory Instrument No. 76, aimed at supporting a 24-hour economy, but warns that the country may not yet be fully prepared for such a transition.
Mr Kamuti stresses that while policies to boost economic activity are welcome, their success depends on proper groundwork, including improved infrastructure and stronger enforcement systems.
He is now urging authorities to prioritise road safety, invest in transport infrastructure, and engage stakeholders before fully implementing night travel.
