The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced the 70 newly formed constituencies, which will form part of Zambia’s democratic structure ahead of the August 2026 General Elections and beyond.
This development brings the total number of constituencies in the country to 226.
ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis says the new constituencies have been distributed across the provinces as follows: Central Province has been allocated 8 Copperbelt 7, Eastern 9, Luapula 5, Lusaka 6, Muchinga 6, Northern 6, North-Western 7, Southern 9 and Western 7
Mrs. Zaloumis has explained that in determining the 70 constituencies, the Commission was guided by constitutional provisions.
These require consideration of factors such as the history, diversity, and cohesiveness of communities; population density and projections; geographical features; means of communication; and the need to maintain constituencies within district boundaries.
She added that the Commission also aimed to achieve approximate equality in population sizes while ensuring adequate representation for both urban and sparsely populated areas.
Mrs. Zaloumis has emphasized that these principles were not created by the Commission but are enshrined in the Constitution.
She has further noted that the final determination of the constituencies was not arbitrary, but a result of extensive consultations with stakeholders at district and provincial levels.
The ECZ Chairperson hss clarified that no district or province was pre-allocated a fixed number of constituencies prior to the completion of the consultative process
