Drug Enforcement Commission says it confiscated scones and cakes laced with high-grade cannabis which were allegedly meant for distribution to patrons during the One Love Reggae Festival, popularly known as the “Jah Night Musical Concert,” held at Mika Convention Centre in Chongwe District.
The operation, conducted jointly with the Zambia Police Service, led to the arrest of thirty-six suspects found with more than four kilogrammes of high-grade cannabis and other illicit drugs.
DEC Deputy Public Relations Officer Theresa Mawere says the suspects were found in possession of cannabis concealed in prepacks and sachets, while officers also seized several bottles of Benylin with Codeine, a controlled medicine commonly abused for recreational purposes.
Ms. Mawere says the arrests were made for trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances contrary to Section 15 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act Number 35 of 2021 of the Laws of Zambia.
The Commission has warned that public entertainment events should not be turned into centres of drug trafficking and abuse, stating that such activities pose serious threats to public health, safety and national security, especially among young people.
DEC further says it will continue intensifying operations against individuals involved in the trafficking, distribution and abuse of illicit drugs across the country.
