MINE WORKERS’ UNION WARNS OF ACID HEALTH HAZARDS

.

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has raised concerns on the rise in medical admissions due to acid-related health complications in the mining sector.

MUZ President Joseph Chewe has accused some mining companies of neglecting workers’ safety by failing to provide protective equipment.

Mr. Chewe has also criticized the use of short-term contracts, warning that Zambia’s goal of producing 3 million tonnes of copper by 2030 could be at risk.

MUZ has however welcomed positive developments such as the reopening of Kalengwa Mine and investments by Barrick and First Quantum Minerals-FQM.
