Due to the district’s scarcity of trees, the Chirundu Town Council has requested that the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment extend the charcoal ban to valley areas such as Chirundu.
Council Secretary Embassy Chembo supports governments’ calls to designate some districts as “No Charcoal Zones,” claiming that charcoal trading and burning in Chirundu is rampant due to increased demand from surrounding areas and Zimbabwe, which has grown the practice.
Addressing the media in the district, Mr. Chembo stated that Zambia will become a desert if this vice is not controlled, particularly in areas such as Chirundu, where temperatures can reach forty to forty-four degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, some goat meat traders in the area have revealed that charcoal is a key ingredient in keeping their businesses running despite the country’s high cost of living to support their families.
