Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) has raised concern over the increasing encroachment on sewer infrastructure in Chingola District.
Utility Communications Manager Bright Mtonga has told Diamond news that, more than 100 properties have encroached on critical sections of the sewer network, a situation that is contributing to persistent sewer blockages and overflows.
Mr. Mtonga says the encroachment is restricting access to sewer lines and manholes required for routine maintenance, unblocking and replacement of collapsed pipes.
He says recent inspections and community engagements revealed that while the challenge exists across the company’s operational areas, Chabanyama, Chikola, Chiwempala, Nchanga North and Buyantashi Townships in Chingola have recorded significant cases.
He says some of the affected areas also experience frequent sewer flooding.
He says structures built on or too close to sewer lines make it difficult for maintenance teams and equipment to access affected infrastructure, thereby prolonging sewer overflows and exposing communities to environmental pollution and public health risks, particularly in densely populated areas.
He explained that sewer infrastructure is designed to safely collect and transport waste water and must always remain accessible, noting that continued encroachment compromises the integrity of the network and undermines efforts to provide safe and reliable sanitation services.
He has since appealed to residents and developers to refrain from constructing houses, extensions or other structures on designated sewer lines or over manholes.
He has urged property owners who have already encroached on sewer infrastructure to cooperate with the relevant authorities as corrective measures are undertaken.
