The National Assembly of Zambia has approved the realignment of Government ministries, paving the way for an increase in the number of ministries from 24 to 30.
The motion was moved by Vice President Mutale Nalumango following President Hakainde Hichilema’s request for parliamentary approval to establish, merge and dissolve ministries.
Under the new structure, the Ministry of Energy has been split into the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Petroleum
The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has also been split into the Ministry of Trade and Exports and the Ministry of Industry
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has been separated from Skills and Higher Education, while the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts has been divided into the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Culture and Arts
The restructuring was undertaken under Article 92(2)(d) of the Constitution of Zambia, which requires the President to obtain approval from the National Assembly to establish, merge or dissolve Government ministries.
