Pope Leo XIV is set to undergo surgery in the coming days after doctors discovered a localized nodule in his lung.
The Pope disclosed the development while addressing the faithful gathered for the Angelus on Sunday, saying the nodule was detected at a very early stage and is well localized.
A lung nodule is a small lump of tissue in the lung that can be caused by infections, inflammation or, in some cases, cancer. Its discovery does not automatically mean that it is cancerous.
Pope Leo XIV says his doctors had recommended surgery and that he would follow their advice.
He has thanked the faithful for their spiritual closeness and entrusted himself to their prayers as he prepares for the procedure.
