A woman of Kandu Village in Chief Mukuni’s area of Kazungula District, Southern Zambia, has lost all her household property following an inferno whose source remains unknown.
While authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, sources close to the matter have told Diamond News that the fire spread rapidly, overwhelming local rescue efforts.
According to sources, the fire is suspected to have originated from a nearby bush close to the gutted house, although it remains unclear who may have ignited it.
The victim, Theresa Kayonde, says she lost all her belongings, including building materials and more than K2,000 in cash.
A devastated Ms. Kayonde is now appealing to members of the community and well-wishers for support as she seeks to rebuild her life following the tragedy.
Fire incidents are not new in Chief Mukuni’s area, where strong winds often contribute to the rapid spread of fires.
Many residents believe there is need to gradually replace thatched structures with iron-roofed houses as one way of reducing the frequent occurrence of such incidents.
