The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has suspended all political campaign activities in Mazabuka Central Constituency due to what it describes as an unstable security situation in the area.
In a statement issued by Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro, the Commission says the suspension will remain in effect until further notice as authorities work to restore calm and order.
The Commission has also acknowledged the action taken by the Zambia Police Service to suspend public gatherings in the constituency in the interest of maintaining peace and ensuring a secure environment for citizens and electoral stakeholders.
ECZ says it will continue monitoring the situation closely in collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders before providing guidance on when campaigns can resume.
Meanwhile, the Commission has strongly condemned the recent incidents of violence recorded in Kabwe Central and Chawama Constituencies in Kabwe and Lusaka districts respectively.
The electoral body says it is currently reviewing the incidents in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders and will determine the appropriate course of action in accordance with the law.
ECZ has since appealed to members of the public, political parties, candidates and their supporters to remain calm, exercise restraint and comply fully with directives issued by the Commission and law enforcement agencies.
