Three suspected armed robbers have been shot dead in a joint police operation spanning Sinda and Katete districts in Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed that the incident occurred yesterday, 20th October 2026, following intelligence reports that four armed criminals were planning to rob a local businessman of Indian origin in Sinda District.
Mr. Mweemba says the Anti-Robbery Squad officers challenged the suspects at around 18:30 hours near the targeted businessman’s shop.
One suspect produced an AK-47 rifle, prompting police to open fire, fatally wounding two suspects on the spot.
A third suspect, Charles Lwenga of Petauke, was apprehended after falling off a getaway motorbike, while the fourth escaped towards Katete District.
Mr. Lwenga later led officers to Katete near Katete Airstrip, where the fleeing suspect was spotted. During pursuit, Lwenga attempted to escape and was fatally shot.
The fourth suspect remains at large, and a manhunt has been launched.
An AK-47 rifle with seven rounds of ammunition and an unregistered red motorbike were recovered.
The deceased were wanted for aggravated robberies in Lundazi on 1st October and Petauke on 14th October 2026.
