Three people have died while several others sustained serious injuries in separate road traffic accidents recorded in Lusaka and Chilanga districts.
Police say among the fatalities were two unidentified male pedestrians who died in separate hit-and-run accidents in Chilanga and Sinoma areas, while a five-year-old boy of Chaisa Compound died after being struck by a vehicle that reportedly detached from a towing chain along the Great North Road near Mandevu.
According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the juvenile was seated at a makeshift shelter when the accident happened around 19:30 hours.
Police have further disclosed that three pedestrians from the same accident sustained serious injuries and are currently admitted to Matero Level One Hospital.
Meanwhile, several other road traffic accidents were recorded across Lusaka, leaving a number of people with serious and slight injuries.
These include a collision involving a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Hiace minibus at the junction of Mosi-oa-Tunya and Arthur Wina roads, in which six passengers sustained injuries.
In another incident, a 58-year-old pedestrian sustained serious injuries after being hit by a Toyota Hiace minibus along Zambezi Road near Mount Meru Headquarters.
Police have since instituted investigations into the reported accidents and are making efforts to trace the drivers involved in the hit-and-run cases.
The Zambia Police Service has since urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and adhere to road traffic regulations to help reduce accidents on the roads.
