SUPER LEAGUE SET FOR EXPANSION AS MWEEMBA UNVEILS NEW CUP COMPETITION

.

The Football Association of Zambia has tabled a series of far-reaching proposals at its Annual General Meeting in Ndola on Saturday, including plans to expand both the MTN Super League and the National League from 18 to 20 teams.

If approved, clubs will play 38 matches per season, up from the current 34, with only two teams relegated from the top flight this campaign to ease the transition, while four sides earn promotion from the National League.

Among the boldest proposals is a shift in the football calendar, moving away from the current August-May cycle to a new March-November season in response to climate change concerns. Before the full switch takes effect in March 2027, a transitional short season will run from September to December 2026, with 20 teams in each division split into two groups of 10 based on final league standings. Promotion and relegation may be limited or temporarily suspended during that period, while a playoff between the two group winners is also under consideration.

FAZ President Keith Mweemba further confirmed that a new cup competition will be introduced alongside the existing ABSA Cup from next season, with details to follow. He also used the platform to call for unity among football stakeholders, warning that persistent internal divisions would continue to hold the game back.
