AIRLINES INTRODUCE FUEL SURCHARGES AS JET FUEL PRICES RISE, PUSHING UP AIRFARES

.

The Civil Aviation Authority Director General says the increase in global fuel prices, particularly jet fuel, has forced airlines to introduce fuel surcharges in a bid to cushion their operations amid ongoing economic pressures.

CAA Director General Derick Lwembe explains that fuel remains one of the biggest cost drivers in the aviation industry, accounting for a significant portion of airlines’ operating expenses.

He has noted that the recent rise in prices has been influenced by persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted global oil supply chains.

Mr. Lwembe has added that the introduction of fuel surcharges has a direct impact on passengers, as it contributes to higher air ticket prices, a trend that reflects the broader strain being experienced across the aviation sector.
