Government says the implementation of a 24-hour economy is attainable and necessary to accelerate Zambia’s economic growth and create more jobs.
Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga says the initiative, which has been approved by Cabinet, will be rolled out in phases starting with key sectors such as retail and transport.
Mulenga says the phased approach is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition while allowing critical sectors to lead in driving round-the-clock economic activity.
He explains that the move will enable businesses to operate beyond traditional working hours, thereby increasing productivity and improving access to goods and services for citizens.
Mulenga notes that the 24-hour economy will also help reduce congestion currently experienced during the day, as economic activities will be spread throughout the day and night.
He adds that the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities, especially for young people, as businesses introduce new shifts to sustain operations.
The Minister emphasizes that the policy is not meant to overwork existing employees but to open up opportunities for those currently not employed.
Mulenga further states that the initiative will contribute to expanding the country’s tax base, as increased economic activity will result in more people contributing to national revenue without the need to raise tax rates.
On security concerns, he assures the public that law enforcement agencies will remain vigilant, stressing that the extension of business hours does not give room for criminal activities.
