MEDIA MUST PREPARE CITIZENS FOR TOUGH TIMES AHEAD — MWEETWA URGES

.

Minister of Information and Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has urged the media to not only uphold professionalism ahead of the August elections but also prepare citizens for difficult times driven by global economic shocks, warning that rising fuel costs and economic pressures will inevitably impact Zambia.

Speaking during the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Media Electoral Reporting Workshop in Choma Southern Province, Mr Mweetwa emphasised the need for broadcasters to remain beacons of truth by avoiding unverified and unbalanced reporting, especially in the face of growing misinformation fueled by artificial intelligence.

He has assured that government communication will now be accompanied by verifiable audio and video to curb fake information, while reiterating government’s commitment to media protection and a harassment-free environment.

He adds that the media has the power to shape national character and must help safeguard democracy as the country heads into a closely watched election period.

Meanwhile, IBA Director General Webster Malido says the workshop has brought together media practitioners and stakeholders from across the country to strengthen electoral reporting, enhance professionalism, and promote balanced coverage.
