NO BY-ELECTION TO BE HELD IN MPIKA

.

Government has confirmed that no by-election will be held in Mpika following the vacancy created by the death of Mpika Town Council Chairperson Morgan Musoma on January 28, 2026. The seat officially became vacant on February 4.

Acting Leader of Government Business in Parliament Jack Mwiimbu says conducting a by-election at this stage would jeopardize the electoral process, citing inadequate time and logistical challenges, especially with the general election scheduled for August 13, 2026.

Mr Mwiimbu explained that while Articles 56, 57 and 158 of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016 require by-elections to be held within 90 days of a vacancy, the same law also prohibits by-elections within 180 days before a general election.

He noted that although the 180-day blackout period formally begins on February 13, the proximity to the general election makes it impractical to proceed with a by-election.

The matter was raised earlier this week by Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament Stephen Kampyongo, who sought clarification on whether Mpika would go to the polls.
