RTSA REPORTS OVER 12 000 ROAD TRAFFIC DEATHS IN 6 YEARS

.

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) says 12,196 people have died in road traffic accidents over the last six years.

RTSA Statistics and Research Officer Simon Mwale says the fatalities are from 195,336 road accidents recorded between 2020 and September 2025.

He adds that more than 30,000 people sustained serious injuries during the same period.

Meanwhile, RTSA Deputy Director–Safety, Engineer Mubanga Mulenga, says vulnerable road users mainly pedestrians and cyclists account for more than 50 percent of the fatalities.

He notes that road accidents cost the Zambian economy US$0.9 billion annually, representing 4.7 percent of the country’s GDP.

.

And RTSA Director and Chief Executive Officer Amon Mweemba says RTSA has engaged the Lusaka City Council to address the increasing number of wheelbarrow pushers who are becoming a nuisance on the roads.

Eng. Mweemba has emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility, requiring action from pedestrians, motorists, and policymakers.

He further has revealed that the contractor working on the Lusaka–Ndola dual carriageway has assured the agency that the stretch between Lusaka and 6 Miles will be completed within the next 10 days, a development expected to ease persistent traffic congestion.
