A Zambian woman has been murdered, and another severely injured, following an aggravated robbery in the early hours of October 31, 2025 in Lupinga Village, Mchinji District, Malawi.
The victims, Jane Lungu, 62, and Agness Bwalya, had traveled to Malawi on a business trip to buy beans.
They were staying at the home of a man identified only as Bwalya, who claimed to be a relative after meeting them during cross-border business activities.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba in a statement says the suspect, together with two unidentified accomplices, attacked the women while they slept.
The assailants allegedly poured hot water on them before assaulting them with sharp objects.
They fled with the victims’ phones, handbags, passports, cash, and national identity cards.
Neighbors, alerted by the women’s cries for help, found them lying in pools of blood.
Agness Bwalya was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital, while Jane Lungu sustained deep head cuts and severe burns to her neck, chest, and hands and she remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition and may be transferred for specialist treatment.
Both Malawian and Zambian police have launched investigations, with a manhunt underway for the primary suspect, Bwalya, who is also a Zambian national. Authorities are working to contact the victims’ families for formal identification and further medical and postmortem procedures.
