A 40-year-old man has been found brutally murdered and half-burnt following allegations of witchcraft in Lwambo Village of Chama District Eastern Province.
The victim, identified as Rodgious Gondwe, was allegedly targeted by a mob blaming him for the recent death of a local villager, Masiye Nyirongo.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed to Diamond News that the Incident happened in a bush on Saturday, 6th September 2025.
The discovery was made around 10:00 hrs by a search party from the village.
Mr. Mweemba says Headman Lwambo Village had warned the deceased that people returning from Nyirongo’s funeral were planning to kill him.
Shortly after the headman left, a group arrived at Gondwe’s home. In a desperate attempt to escape, he fled into the surrounding area but was pursued and caught by the assailants.
His body was found in the bush bearing signs of a violent attack and partial burning.
The police have classified the incident as murder and are investigating, though no arrests have been announced yet.
Chief Tembwe of Chama District has told Diamond News that he will on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 convene council of elders at the palace and see the possible solution to the escalating problem in his chiefdom.
He has warned anyone involved that the law will take its own course because no one above the law.
