SULPHUR TRUCK DRIVER BURNT TO DEATH IN NAKONDE

A transporter of sulphur en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo has been burnt to death after being trapped in the cabin of his truck following a road traffic accident in Nakonde.

Gilbert Chikonkolo Bwalya, 44, of Garden Compound in Lusaka, died after the Sino Howo truck he was driving overturned and caught fire.

According to Muchinga Police Commissioner Lubinda Mayamba, the accident occurred yesterday, Wednesday, 7th October 2026, around 07:00 hours at Luchiya area along the Great North Road, 42 kilometres south of Nakonde District.

Mr. Mayamba said the lone vehicle belonging to GSM Company Limited lost control due to excessive speed and careered off to the left side of the road before overturning.

He added that due to the impact, the driver sustained fatal head and body injuries after being trapped and burnt inside the cabin and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nakonde District Hospital.

His body has been deposited in the Nakonde District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
