The United Party for National Development (UPND) has strongly condemned the recent attack on Alfonso Kasongo, a journalist from Power TV Zambia, allegedly by party cadres over the weekend, describing the incident as unacceptable and contrary to the party’s principles of upholding the rule of law.
Speaking at a press briefing, UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe said the party has distanced itself from the actions of the individuals involved, stressing that President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive on law and order applies to everyone, including UPND members.
He said the Head of State’s stance is clear: anyone who breaks the law does so at their own risk and must face legal consequences without exception.
Mr Simuuwe noted that the party cannot and will not shield any of its members implicated in acts of violence against journalists, adding that such behaviour undermines democratic values and press freedom.
He further called on law enforcement agencies to move swiftly in identifying and arresting the perpetrators, while encouraging journalists to formally report incidents of abuse to ensure justice is served.
He also cautioned aspiring political candidates and their supporters against engaging in or condoning violence, warning that doing so not only violates the law but also party regulations, which could result in disciplinary action.
