Iran’s Foreign Minister has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open” to commercial shipping for the duration of the current ceasefire, easing immediate fears of a major disruption to global oil supplies.
Moments after the announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump posted “THANK YOU!” on his Truth Social platform, but quickly added that a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place until a broader peace agreement is reached.
Global oil markets reacted swiftly, with prices dropping following Iran’s reassurance.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical transit chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil shipments passes daily, making any disruption a major concern for international energy security.
Meanwhile, a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has come into effect, sparking celebrations and fireworks in the capital, Beirut.
The truce follows six weeks of intense conflict that has left more than 2,000 people dead in Lebanon, with around one in five citizens displaced. Israel reports that two civilians and 13 soldiers were killed during the same period.
