Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe has refuted claims that Zambians in the diaspora staged protests against Zambia at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
According to a statement issued by First Secretary Press and Public, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations
Namatama Njekwa, Mr Haimbe says Zambia was instead warmly received and the opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly was well attended.
Representing President Hakainde Hichilema at 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) Mr Haimbe said allegations circulating on social media about protests against Zambia should be disregarded.
He said many Zambians living in the United States had expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the August 2026 general elections and conveyed optimism about the country’s continued development.
Mr Haimbe has since called on Zambians to move beyond political differences arising from the elections and uphold peace, unity and national cohesion.
He says those who voted for and against the government should now move forward together and focus on national development.
Meanwhile, Zambia has used its participation at UNGA81 to strengthen its international partnerships.
Mr Haimbe has signed a Joint Communique with Andorra’s Foreign Affairs Minister Imma Tor Faus establishing diplomatic relations between Zambia and the Principality of Andorra.
The new diplomatic relations are expected to open opportunities for cooperation in tourism, digital governance, financial services, education and climate action.
Zambia has also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthened multilateralism and participated in a high-level discussion on implementation of the Pact for the Future.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi attended the launch of the Accra Reset High-Level Panel report on reform of the global health architecture.
Mr Haimbe is expected to deliver Zambia’s National Statement on September 28 on behalf of President Hichilema, with strengthened multilateralism expected to feature prominently.
Zambia says its engagements at UNGA81 are aimed at advancing peace, national unity, international cooperation and the Grow Zambia Agenda.
