The Lusaka City Council has directed all street vendors to vacate undesignated trading areas and return to their allocated spaces in markets by September 29, 2026.
The Council says vendors who fail to comply with the directive risk losing their trading spaces, which will subsequently be allocated to prospective traders.
In a public notice issued by Town Clerk Oliver Muuka, the Council says the directive is aimed at enforcing regulations governing public markets, bus stations and street vending.
The Council has cited the Markets and Bus Stations Act Number 7 of 2007 and Statutory Instrument Number 12 of 2018, which empower local authorities to regulate trading and manage public markets and bus stations.
LCC has warned that street vending in undesignated areas will no longer be tolerated after the September 29 deadline.
The directive comes amid ongoing efforts by the local authority and the Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa to move traders from the streets into designated trading spaces in markets.
