
Kalabo District police have recovered an AK-47 rifle with two rounds of live ammunition and an empty cartridge after a suspect managed to escape in Kakona Village, located in Chief Kaongolo’s area of Western Province.
Western Province Police Commanding Officer David Chileshe confirmed the incident to Diamond Media, revealing that the matter was reported by 45-year-old Jonah Kamuti, a resident of the area. According to Chileshe, Kamuti had apprehended a man identified as Mukela, who hails from Mucuu in Sikongo District, after discovering him in possession of the firearm.
Kamuti immediately alerted the authorities via phone, but before officers could arrive at the scene, the suspect managed to evade capture and fled to an unknown location, leaving behind the weapon and ammunition.
Following the incident, police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they secured the recovered firearm and launched an immediate manhunt for the fugitive. Law enforcement officials are now calling on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities that may assist in locating and apprehending the suspect.
The presence of illegal firearms in communities continues to pose a significant security concern, and authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on such cases. Residents of Kalabo and surrounding areas have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement by providing any information that could help bring the suspect to justice.
