PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS, ROADMAP UNVEILED

.

Minister of Justice Princess Kasune has presented the proposed constitutional amendments to Parliament, along with a detailed roadmap outlining the process.

Among the key proposals is Constituency Delimitation, which seeks to amend Articles 58 and 68 to redraw electoral boundaries for a more equitable distribution of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), based on size and population.

Another significant amendment involves the Candidate Resignation Clause, which proposes changes to Article 52(6) to allow elections to proceed without fresh nominations if a candidate resigns.

The Enhanced Representation Proposal calls for amendments to Articles 47(2) and 68 to guarantee seats for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

Additionally, the proposal to Reintegrate MPs in Councils aims to amend Article 153(2), allowing Members of Parliament to participate in local councils to enhance coordination in development efforts.

.

The amendments also include Election Petition Clarity, which proposes changes to Articles 73(2), 101(5), and 103(2) to establish clear timelines for determining election petitions—either within 90 or 14 days, depending on the case.
